ABSTRACT

Stacey K. Black begins by talking about how she prepares for a job and acclimates herself to the style of a show and fits her style into a showrunner’s vision. She talks about “sprinkling a little Stacey on it” – finding places in the script where she can insert a little something of her own. She then discusses how different the dynamics and politics of each show are, and how you have to figure that out without being distracted from your job. She stresses the importance of doing your homework in order to earn the trust of the cast and crew, and how she blocks and shot-lists but allows herself the freedom to change her mind during production. She discusses directing actors on long-running series and the director’s responsibility helping facilitate their best work, and covers how to deal with on-set conflicts. She then explores the design of specific action sequences on shows such as NCIS: New Orleans and what she does when her plans go wrong and she has to adapt. She concludes by talking about the challenges of working with visual effects on Midnight, Texas and her most recent work on The Fix and Bull.
