ABSTRACT

Nudism or exposure of the naked human body for one reason or another presents a case of conflicting attitudes in Western culture that still has not been resolved satisfactorily. Nudism to Richard Ungewitter was a panacea for the social problems affecting modern civilization. Nudists of the time never tired of pointing out that the complete and unabashed practice of nudism was not an erotic experience, and many went to almost puritanical lengths to make certain that no overt sexuality was associated with the movement. Inevitably any movement for nudity would be bound to have some effect upon attitudes toward clothing and perhaps even toward sexuality. Nudists, in spite of their lack of clothing, tried to deny human sexuality by arguing that it was clothing that created erotic feelings. When many of the clothing inhibitions were discarded by the public, nudists had to find other justifications for their pastime.
