ABSTRACT

Very often, as our discussion has proceeded, quotations have been noted which contain the author’s address of humility in which he says his book is finished, and as it goes forth, he begs his readers or his patron, to forgive his rudeness, to correct his work where it is erring, or at least to overlook it, for he means well. Such addresses are to be found generally in dedications or in the epilogue appended to a work, and are a recognized medieval formula.
