ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 provides an array of incidents and big ethical moments where colleagues, students or research participants call attention to a researcher’s outstanding ethical issue. These examples can be read as a whole or interspersed within the previous chapters. Thinking through what is the right thing to do helps strengthen the ethical imagination and confidence about being able to act in response to issues that might arise post formal ethical review. It shows the fallibility of research and researchers, something not often discussed, creating an impression that everything is done without any “hitches”. By exposing novice researchers early to problems, it helps them be aware of things they need to consider (participant needs, etc.), but also makes clear that having to address something in the field is not a failure per se.
