ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 provides one of two Capstone exercises that strengthens learning by building on newly developed understandings. This first Capstone focuses on ethical considerations the researcher controls when exempt from formal ethics review. The task involves a researcher negotiating access to a social agency that asks five questions:

What does the statement, “nothing about us, without us”, mean?

How long will you spend with the organisation, and what is your exit strategy?

What skills do you have that you could leave with the social agency after you leave?

Are you an insider or an outsider to the organisation? What do you already know, or assume to know, about the organisation?

Are you going to research “on us or with us”?

This exercise is similar to Eve’s story used earlier, but importantly, the researcher is engaging transparently with the social agency in good faith prior to commencing any research.
