ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the ways that in empirical research, visual displays represent ideas at the same time they generate them. The chapter introduces creative approaches to integrating different sources of data in visual displays to advance theoretical reasoning. These include mapping, timelining, and variations of cluster mapping. The chapter begins by considering the types and purposes of visual displays that integrate qualitative and quantitative data and/or approaches. The next section of the chapter is devoted to describing several different ways that participatory approaches have been used during data collection, including through mapping and timelining. The section that follows shifts the focus away from the use of visual displays during data collection to those that serve as a platform to integrate data during analysis. In the last part of the chapter, we consider a hypothetical example that illustrates the interactive interplay that can occur when data collection and data analysis overlap.
