ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces you to some basic notions on language and communication. It begins with communication, giving a definition of it and indicating some of its functions. It then goes on to define ‘language’; first in its broadest sense, as a rule-governed semiotic system, then in a stricter sense, with references to specific human languages. Possible approaches to the study of language and communication are then discussed and the scope and aims of linguistics are presented. The chapter concludes by arguing how knowledge of insights drawn from linguistics can be beneficial for improving communication.
