ABSTRACT
The chapter begins by giving a working definition of ‘culture’. It then goes on to discuss how culture is the constant backdrop against which we understand the world and communicate, and the role of cultural knowledge in interaction. It then goes on to explore intercultural communication, how and why it can go wrong as well as some of the benefits that it offers. In discussing culture, the chapter also explains how stereotypes and prejudice can affect communication.
