ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 begins the unit on fear. Understanding how fear works as an emotion is pivotal to emotion management. Counselors and educators are offered specific communication approaches toward understanding adolescent emotions from the teen’s point of view. Toxic emotionality, sometimes called toxic masculinity, and denial of fear reinforces the teen belief that they are misunderstood. A teen’s operational knowledge of how fear functions includes understanding the defense mechanisms (the Mind Tricks) of denial, displacement, projection, intellectualization, and rationalization. The chapter’s full explication of fear includes the mechanics of prejudice and bigotry. Chapters 11 and 12 center on the thinking part of fear. Three activities are provided with the activity sheet, List of Fear Words, which is used multiple times in subsequent chapters.
