ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 initiates the step-by-step work of learning how to handle fear constructively. Such knowledge is a core component of emotional intelligence. Purposely changing the language that denies emotional truth begins healthy expression of the emotion. A definition of teen fear as natural and normal proceeds to an examination of the sources of fear. Danger and a teen’s many unknowns are explored as broad categories of adolescent fears. The role of self-talk is examined and reframing problems as challenges is described. Throughout, adolescent fears are detailed for the counselor and educator from a teen-centered point of view. Four activities underscore the narrative along with one activity sheet, The Pledge.
