ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 begins the exploration of the verbal means of expressing and channeling fear. Besides crying, as presented in Chapter 13, seven categories of constructively channeling fear are given for counselors and educators to use in aiding teens in fear management. Verbal strategies include Talk It Out and selectively changing (reframing) the self-talk that generates the emotion. Seeking new knowledge and asking for help are fear management approaches to be actively fostered in teens. Taking constructive action and asking for a hug are additional fear management strategies presented. The issue of adult physical contact with youngsters in schools is stated in the framework of reasonable precautions taken while still enabling tangible nurturance of fearful teens. Four activities are presented along with the activity sheet Win-win Conflict Resolution with Emotion, Worksheet Two.
