ABSTRACT

Chapter 16 begins the final unit of the book, the chapters devoted to the final of the four challenging emotions, grief and guilt. This chapter clarifies the dynamics of grief. The roles of the psychological processes of identification and attachment are seen as inherent to the developmental task of community. Emotional enmeshment, jealousy, dependent attachment, and deep teen woundedness are sometimes the outcome of efforts to build community. Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross’s model of grieving is suggested as foundational to every teen’s insight into how to grieve. The stages of assisting teens in directing the emotion of grief toward acceptance are described in reference to the extreme tragedies counselors and educators today face. Three activities close the chapter. The activity sheet is the List of Feeling Words centering on the emotions of grief, guilt, and other challenging emotions.
