ABSTRACT

How today’s counselors and educators may assist adolescents in working through the grief caused by deaths of fellow teens is surveyed in Chapter 18. Understanding the natural processes of grief aids schools in structuring rituals for mourning that help teens in their experience of grief. Explaining the difference between mourning and depression supports teens in reframing loss. Grief becomes good grief when it is channeled into positive values like empathy and compassion. In formal commemorations grief may be transformed by the psychological process of identification. The paths of grief are explored as the A, B, Cs of emotions are applied specifically to grief. Seven activities are provided. The two activity sheets are Definitions of Composite Emotions and Happy Emotions.
