ABSTRACT

Building the toolbox to develop emotional health begins with counselors and educators. Self-efficacy starts with the fundamentals about feelings which are presented simply with clear definitions. The adolescent developmental task of individuation is introduced in the context of discernment of emotions. The technique of structuring choices for young children is scaled up to building rapport through teen use of cell phones. The educator is encouraged to use teens’ love of fantasy to convey core principles. Three key, cultural misunderstandings and myths about emotions are described. These misconceptions are that emotions are animalistic and degrading, irrational and self-destructive, and are just tools for control. Six activities are given at the end of the chapter with one activity sheet, Knowing My Emotions. Throughout, the activities at the end of each chapter use and apply the knowledge and principles explained in the chapter.
