ABSTRACT

Chapter 19 examines guilt as the fourth of the four uncomfortable, challenging emotions The role of a value system and expectations of behavior are framed in light of the development of conscience and guilt. Healthy guilt is contrasted with unhealthy guilt. The A, B, Cs of emotion are applied to the process of guilt. Internalization of values is tied to internalization of adult expectations. The step-by-step process of the formation of a conscience by internalization is explained. Examples are given for counselors and educators to embrace their role of societal change agents who use uncompromising speech to inculcate uncompromising values. A detailed explanation shows how to achieve this by using words that support what the brain does naturally. The four activities conclude the activities in the book. The two activity sheets detail decisions, both constructive and unacceptable, that are often defined as emotions.
