ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 begins with the model of The Head and The Heart to differentiate the emotional sphere from the rational. The concept of self-talk is introduced as foundational to initiating rational management of what historically have been labeled negative emotions. Now renamed uncomfortable and challenging emotions, these feelings are specified as anger, fear, grief, and guilt. Old myths about not being able to control emotions and having horrible thoughts are replaced by the principle of the power of choice. Instruction in emotional regulation is begun with the metaphor of the ebb and flow of water. Allowing the flow of emotions is contrasted with building dams. Suggestions are offered to interact with silent teens in order to elicit sharing of emotions in a variety of approaches. Five activities are offered and two activity sheets, Fairy Tale of the Magic Water and Our Cheating Hearts.
