ABSTRACT

The unit on anger begins in Chapter 5. In it the A, B, Cs are applied to anger exclusively. Anger in teens is explored as a greatly misunderstood output of individuation. The metaphor of castle walls describes the building of self-identity, of ego. The constructive purpose of anger in the teen psyche is explained along with the role of determination. The parallel adolescent developmental task of community is shown in the context of anger and bullying. The role of fear and anger is fully examined in both the bully and the bullied. A diagram of the Two Paths of Anger is given to place overriding emphasis on The Line, the choice point dividing feeling visceral emotion and acting on it. Solutions lie in intervention by adult co-partnering with both bully and bullied. Use of I Language is given as a tool for positive expression of emotion. Five activities are designated with two activity sheets. The A Word activity is purposely designed to stimulate adolescent reactivity while examining common anger-generating statements. Use of the List of Anger Words begins and continues throughout the unit.
