ABSTRACT

This chapter includes six case studies, three in the U.S. and three in other countries. There are voluntary/demonstration examples, including private sector initiatives, public education, awards programs, demonstration projects, incentive grants and rebates. And there are a host of policy initiatives: municipal resolutions, procurement policies, comprehensive plans, design guidelines, zoning codes, building codes, green building standards, air quality requirements, government insurance, subsidies, tree and landscape ordinances. The American case studies include Chicago, Salt Lake City and Houston. The international ones are Stuttgart, Germany, Muscat, Oman and Ahmedabad, India. C40 is a network of the world’s megacities committed to addressing CC that has published 100 case studies of cities of every size, geography and stage of development around the earth. Their Good Practice Guides provide tangible examples of climate solutions and nearly 70 categories of good practice and actions in energy, transport, solid waste management, urban planning, adaptation and finance. Their pamphlet Cool Cities and companion booklets are a good resource for professionals and officials involved with cities in the war against CC.
