ABSTRACT

Next day I bought three sleighs and five sheep, which latter we slaughtered. During the day we packed up our tent, the remainder of our stock of goods and an abundance of provisions. Late at night, while the Kiäkt valley slept, we loaded all this on the three sleighs, carefully locked up our house and set out for the north. At midnight we came to the canyon leading up to the Mus-dawan pass and there pitched camp. Next morning we went on up the canyon and at sunset came to the foot of the pass, where we found an ideal camping-place, sheltered, but so situated that our fire could not fail to be observed by every passing traveller. A noble fire was lighted in front of the tent and within it we put a pan full of embers. A big pot of steaming tea stood ready, and Bater threaded alternate pieces of fat and lean mutton on a skewer, ready to grill over the fire into a splendidly fragrant shaslik.
