ABSTRACT

I Was awakened at dawn by an infernal din outside the house. It was almost dark, and snow was drifting down through the roof opening. I woke Bater and told him to make up the fire, and myself went to the door. The old Lama had disappeared. The door was wrenched out of my hand and thrown wide open. All old tracks round the house were covered over by a foot of snow. A single track led from the door of the house in the direction of the Soyote pass, a human trail, but the impression in the snow did not form two lines as human trails are wont to do, but only a single long line like the track of a wolf.
