ABSTRACT
After seven days of march and rest we came to Sheng-Wat-Sin, which proved to be a piece of Chinese civilization within a brownish grey brick wall. The strong watch-towers and many loopholes indicated that the Chinese administration of the village did not feel too secure against the t’u-fei of the region, or else they were a survival of the yellow man’s inherited fear of the Mongols.
