ABSTRACT
The British impact on place names in India was of two kinds: first, in the nature of Englishization, and second in the spirit of Anglicization. While Englishization and Anglicization differed in their forms, characters and extent of impact on place names in India, nevertheless the common aspiration in both these processes was to wield efficient administrative control through the instrument of place names. Since the orthography was changed in order to benefit the English-speaking population, a better expression for this process would be Anglicization. The Anglicization of place names was guided by the commercial and administrative interests of the British in India. The British introduced two types of personal English names in India – first, in the form of names of their spouses and second, in the form of the names of British officers who served in India. The hill stations were given English names.
