ABSTRACT

Penetration is the perceptive understanding of complex matters. A penetrating state of mind is focused on getting to the truth in a way that includes differing perspectives. The state of penetration avoids attempts to solve a situation through command and control. Managers who have successfully tackled large complex projects engage employees in diagnosing and proposing solutions. Having people share their personal stories and experiences falls into narrative sensemaking. When a leader neglects to communicate a personal story around his or her values, employees might not connect with what's important to him or her. The manager was concerned about a theft that had taken place, but the employees argued that the computer room was manned so no one could steal something without being seen. Penetration through sensemaking is best used in ambiguous situations where all the information is not readily apparent. They involve the employees in the identification, assessment and solution to address the hazard.
