ABSTRACT

Margaret signed a contract with the captains, Sir John Middleton, Sir Thomas Everingham, and Sir John Dichef eld, on 8th August, and Middleton’s and Dichefeld’s men were to be ready at Dover, and Everingham’s at Hull, by the 28th. Edward promised Margaret that he would abide by the treaties with Maximilian which he had already signed, provided the duke also signed them within the time appointed and took no further steps towards peace with the king of France without his advice and consent. Margaret’s messenger must have reached London in a few days, but very soon after his arrival an envoy from Louis also appeared there. When Michel de Berghes returned to Flanders, he carried a letter from Margaret saying that the king of England would soon send an embassy to France on Maximilian’s behalf. Moreover, if the Duchess Margaret was going to be hovering around, it was silly, Louis thought, to expect anything to come out of the negotiations.
