ABSTRACT

Francis, who in 1468 had been frightened into submission to Louis by dread of a hostile invasion of his duchy by a French army, had been frightened once more into submission by dread of a peaceful invasion of his duchy by an English army. Francis had to permit the English troops to land in Brittany at the ports nearest to the section of France which was to be attacked, and he had to allow them to come and go through his domains as freely as did his own subjects. Francis begged Edward to send him six thousand archers in case Louis should attack him, and to prove his need he told of Louis’ plan to obtain an army from Scotland. If Francis needed assistance to defend his domains while the invasion of France was going on, Edward was to supply it at the duke’s expense.
