ABSTRACT

“King Edward would say that he had three concubines which in diverse properties diversely excelled, one the merriest, the other the wiliest, the third the holiest harlot in the realm”. As usual, Edward had abstained from quarrelling with Francis even when he had excuse for so doing. He pretended to be content that Richmond should stay in Brittany, and in December he renewed the promise of protection he had given Francis in 1468. To a degree King’s second journey to Brittany was successful, for on 22nd January, 1476, Francis renewed the thirty years’ treaty. But when the duke was reminded that the troops Edward had sent to Brittany both in the past summer and in 1468 had cost him much money and was told that the king thought he ought to be recompensed, he showed no inclination to acknowledge his debt.
