ABSTRACT

The company began in 200310 under the name, “Real-Time Cures.” The company was later renamed Theranos, “an amalgam of the words ‘therapy’ and ‘diagnosis.’” Theranos initially pursued a non-traditional oversight structure, establishing a Board of Counselors as opposed to a Board of Directors. The United States (US) is home to about 600 analytical instrument manufacturing companies with a combined annual revenue of about $17 billion. Food engineering companies employ analytical instruments to isolate the incriminating protein that confers genetic superiority, such as pest resistance. Companies in the analytical laboratory instrument manufacturing industry produce instruments that are used primarily for laboratory analysis of chemical, physical, molecular and elemental properties. Major companies in the US include Mettler-Toledo International, PerkinElmer and Thermo Fisher Scientific. An anonymous source in the pharmaceutical industry gave their opinion on Theranos’s technology. The initial concept around Theranos is an exciting one: less painful, quicker, cheaper, less intimidating medical testing.
