ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the role communication plays in the life of a manager. It examines why managers communicate and also looks much more closely at how managers communicate. The chapter explores the products of that communication process: writing, speaking, listening, conflict management and group interaction. Communication is a process that involves several basic principles. These are concepts we know to be true about human communication across time and cultures, across organizations and professions, and across nations and economies. Communication is rarely ever entirely one-way. Some processes are reversible — we can freeze water into ice and then thaw it back into water again — but not communication. Communication is complex, not only because of the various elements and principles at work in the process, but also because it involves human beings. The corporate annual report to shareholders is a good place to look for business strategy.
