ABSTRACT

This final chapter underscores major themes of the book through case studies of five representative projects:

The Fitzroy on West 24th Street, New York, NY (2019), was designed by Roman and Williams. Produced by Boston Valley Terra Cotta, it uses classic, hand pressed forms like those of the 1920s.

Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, Germany (1994) by Renzo Piano Building Workshop was produced by NBK Keramik. Drawings and process descriptions were provided by Maurits van der Staay, project architect for the façades. This was a seminal project in contemporary terra cotta.

Central Saint Giles, London, UK (2010) by Renzo Piano Building Workshop was also produced by NBK Keramik. It refines the clad curtain wall with layered baguettes and brilliant color. Continuing materials were provided by Maurits van der Staay, Associate in charge at RPBW.

125 Deansgate, Manchester, UK (2021) was designed by Glenn Howells Architects and produced by NBK. The disciplined application of terra cotta and glass recalls the early skyscrapers of Chicago.

Tykeson Hall, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR (2019) was designed by Office 52 Architecture and Rowell Brokaw Architects. Though a small volume project, it achieves a quality, cost-effective solution by using a simple inventory of parts by Shildan.
