ABSTRACT

This book provides models of good practice which exemplify how primary school teachers can help children work towards understanding big scientific ideas in outdoor contexts. This chapter explains the structure of the models, and discusses the views on learning which underpin them. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 focus on ideas of science, while chapters 7 and 8 concentrate children’s attention on ideas about science, including social and ethical issues. Each chapter provides models of good practice at three age-related levels: key stage 1 (5-7 years), lower key stage 2 (7-9 years) and upper key stage 2 (9-11 years). It is envisaged that teachers will adapt the models to suit their resources, their curriculum and the needs of their children. The learning goals are consistent with the requirements of the primary school curricula in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
