ABSTRACT

Providing professional supervision in a cultural context incorporates cultural awareness and an understanding of the struggles that many people had, and continue to endure, due to intergenerational experiences. Supervision incorporates trust, respect and an understanding of the culture and life experience of the supervisee. The success of supervision is often dependent on the connection developed in the supervisory relationship, and the skills of the supervisor to build rapport and respect the cultural background of the supervisee. Most organisations provide supervision in a mainstream process by incorporating various supervision documents, written minutes and informal evaluation processes. The supervision process is useful as it assists the supervisor to reflect on what to consider in supervision discussions. Agenda topics that may be discussed in supervision include how knowledge is shared between the supervisor and supervisee and how they engage in the ongoing process of growth.
