ABSTRACT

Feedback is something that occurs in most conversations between two people. Providing feedback and having open discussions in supervision are crucial for practice excellence, maintaining self-care and ensuring the supervisee meets organisational requirements in the role. Engaging feedback in a looped process provides the supervisee with the opportunity to participate proactively and feel what they have to say is important and heard. The feedback process is hard enough without thinking of the right questions to include in the conversation. Where there are issues or concerns the supervisee’s performance in the role, it can often be difficult for them to hear particular things in conversations, particularly if there is difficult feedback. The chapter explores the importance of providing feedback and some of the barriers and challenges that can occur to ensure the process are positive.
