ABSTRACT

A professional excellence framework (PEF) is consistent with the purpose, standards and mission of the organisation and can change based on different roles or when the supervisee moves from one organisation to another. Having a PEF is an essential tool for maintaining performance in any role. As a supervisor a PEF is crucial to understand what supervisees are doing at any time in their role. Often referred to as a professional practice framework, it is a conceptual and visual representation that organises the supervisee’s skills, knowledge and attributes. Different approaches and frameworks inform professional knowledge and influence the practice skills that are used in the supervisee’s role. The supervisee starts to use the framework consciously in their role as a way to effectively demonstrate how they use any and all of the framework areas. In supervision meetings, the supervisee brings agenda topics from the framework, and this becomes part of the focus of the discussion on a regular basis.
