ABSTRACT

Professional supervision is a forum in which the supervisee reviews their work in order to seek feedback, engage in further professional development, reflect-in-practice to ensure quality services are provided. The task and process of supervision becomes more about a ‘tick and flick’ approach without real purpose and meaning. No matter how competent a professional may be, or how long the professional has been in the supervisor role, it is important that supervision remains current and dynamic. Whilst there is a large body of research that explores the importance of professional supervision, there is limited research and understanding about what embodies effective supervision training. Building a positive supervisory alliance is important in supervision. This means there is a positive and productive professional relationship between the supervisor and professional. Research indicates that the supervision alliance is one of the most important elements for staff.
