ABSTRACT

Knowing what skills are required to provide effective supervision is crucial to ensuring that supervision remains effective over time. The purpose of evaluating supervision is to find out how effective the process, framework and conversations are over time. This chapter outlines the different tools that can be used to evaluate supervision to ensure it remains effective. If supervision is only informally evaluated, it is advisable that a formal evaluation of supervision is conducted on an annual basis. A comparative analysis is undertaken in supervision in a reflective process to understand what aspects of supervision are being maintained at a high level and what aspects of supervision need more focus. Supervision is often provided without any type of formal or informal evaluation to ensure it is effective. Many line managers and supervisors provide supervision without having been trained prior to being in the role, or engaging in supervision themselves.
