ABSTRACT

This chapter explores different aspects of placements, including the role of the field placement educator, placement stages, how to select the right students and how to ensure supervision is effective. Deciding to have a student on field placement takes energy, resources and time. It is also possibly one of the most rewarding and positive experiences that a supervisor can have in their career. The role of the field placement supervisor is one of the most important roles within the field education process. Supervisors are instrumental not only in the success of the placement process but also in providing the student with key learning opportunities to learn specific skills and knowledge and qualities. Supervision has been commenced; the student has completed their supervision agreement, plans the agenda for supervision meetings and is transferring learning from supervision into their role on placement.
