ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the symptoms of indifferencity and their causes. When healthcare professionals do not report errors, the opportunity to improve the system is missed and potentially unsafe patient care can take place, which could lead to patient deterioration. Errors are committed even by those who try to do the right things. Therefore, many hospitals adopted the “no blame” policy. A management gap is the difference between what management preaches and the state of the art in management for the applicable environment. Organizations that cultivate the leader’s mindset can succeed over the long term because individuals are expected to think for themselves. Independent surveys by an outside agency are an effective tool to determine the difference and the symptoms. Intimidating and disruptive behaviors are often manifested by healthcare professionals in positions of power. Such behaviors include reluctance or refusal to answer questions, return phone calls or pages; condescending language or voice intonation; and impatience with questions.
