ABSTRACT
The foreign policy of the Prime Minister in relation to France and Germany effected a marked improvement in the state of Europe, and was applauded by his political opponents as cordially as it was by his friends. Parliament was dissolved, and at the General Election on October 29th the Conservative Party obtained a majority of 211 over all other parties, and the Labour Government thereupon resigned. Labour gained more than a million votes, Conservatives gained two and a quarter million, but the Liberal Party lost not only one and a quarter million votes, but 110 out of their 152 seats. At last it seems as if that Party is practically destroyed and that henceforth there will be a straight fight between the Conservatism of the present and the Socialism which is surely coming. The Fabian Society suffered losses in common with the rest of the Labour Party.
