ABSTRACT

The Tanjong Malim College alone provides training and a good position for a hundred young Malays a year, with prospects for the able ones which are really well-paid. Various Commissions on technical education have considered the formation of trade schools and other special facilities for Malays, some of which have already been put into operation with varying success. There is the scheme for Malay officers in the Administrative Branch. They are drawn partly from the students at the Malay College, partly from Malays who have obtained the necessary qualifications at any English schools. Only the higher offices are maimed entirely by Europeans. But against this there are the high chieftaincies in each State, culminating in that of the Sultan, which are held only by Malays and which enable their holders to exert very considerable influence. This influence is increasingly strong in proportion to the knowledge and character of those who fill these positions.
