ABSTRACT

The problem of the cinema in Malaya is the same as in the world at large, particularly among races who are unfamiliar with European life and thought. But it is one of immense urgency, to which too little attention is paid as a rule by those who, in ideas and modes of recreation, are remote from the uncultured and alien masses of the population. In Malaya it is little short of a tragedy that the production of films should be mainly in the hands of a nation which has none of the difficulties and dangers of contact with vast populations of alien standards and beliefs. Films about Malaya, its products, scenery and history, would also be very welcome locally. The triumph of right and virtue which occurs in most films is heartily applauded by a mixed audience, and the good stories or rollicking adventures that often appear have a wholesome as well as popular effect.
