ABSTRACT

The Malays are admittedly immigrants, any legal and moral rights which the aboriginal inhabitants may be considered to possess may well be claimed for the Sakai and Semang. The story of “The Modem Malay” has been shown to be closely entwined with modem British methods in which democratic and autocratic, socialistic and imperial strains have been blended in a maimer appropriate to unparalleled conditions of administration and racial mixture. The Malays have shared in the general prosperity, and, in addition, receive distinctly preferential treatment from the Government, which is paid for out of the profits accruing from the natural wealth of the country and the industry of all races therein. The policy for the future, therefore, is continued British protection and guidance for the whole Peninsula south of Siam, while the Malays are assisted to develop their own peculiar gifts and abilities on their own lines.
