ABSTRACT

King Henry of England had Sir Bertran de Born holed up within Hautefort and was attacking the castle with his war machines, for he really had it in for him. He believed that the whole war that his son, the Young King, had waged against him had occurred because Sir Bertran had made him do it. And so he he had come to Hautefort to see him dispossessed. The King of Aragon joined with King Henry’s army before Hautefort. When Bertran found out, he was very happy to know that the King of Aragon was with the (English) army, for he was a special friend of his. The King of Aragon sent his messengers inside the castle to ask Bertran to send them bread and wine and meat and he sent it to them in abundance. And with the messenger by whom he sent the presents, he sent a message asking him to do what he could to have the war machines moved to another area of the castle for the wall before which they were stationed was weakened. And the other (the King of Aragon), avid for the riches of King Henry, told him everything that Bertran had told him. King Henry then put more of the machines before the portions of the castle that he knew were weak. Thus were the walls brought down and the castle captured.
