ABSTRACT

You have certainly heard who Sir Uc de Saint Circ was and where he came from. He loved a lady from Andutz whose name was Lady Clara. 1 She was clever and learned, pleasant and beautiful. She had a great desire for praise and to be heard about far and near and to have the friendship and intimacy of good ladies and noble men. Sir Uc knew about her desire and he knew just how to serve her in the way that she wanted, for there was not one good lady in that whole land with whom Uc was not able to arrange that Lady Clara should have her love and intimacy and who did not send her letters and greetings and presents in order to remain on good terms and pay her honor. Sir Uc was very good at writing responses to the letters of the ladies who had sent her their little gifts, as was called for. Lady Clara permitted Uc’s beseechment and courting and she promised to give him pleasure in the rights of love. Sir Uc composed many good songs about her, beseeching her and praising her beauty and nobility. She rose in esteem on account of the songs that Sir Uc composed about her. Their love lasted for a long time and many times did they war and make peace along the way, as is the way of lovers in love.
