ABSTRACT
The sandwich model is designed to cope with conflictual situations in disturbed communities. A large group interaction, sandwiched (inserted) between two small group sessions, has a unique potential to transform hate into non-violent co-existence. This setting offers the maximum face-to-face possible for up to hundreds of participants, conducted by the innovative approach of group analysis. Exclusion and rejection dynamics are handled in benign optimal ways by this combination between small and large groups. The sandwich model is a FaceLOOK which provides for an opportunity to counter extremism by enabling violence-inhibiting mechanisms like guilt, shame and empathy to operate. It also provides for a developing space for individuals and groups by struggling to find a voice and the right tone in the presence of the threatening ‘mass’ and massive authority.
