ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the differences and grey areas between rehabilitation centres, sanctuaries, zoos, and rescue centres. The author argues that boundaries between these categories are ongoing sites of tension and debate, or “boundary-work”, with labels often used for political ends and those wishing to defend the legitimacy of a category pushing back against such strategic labelling. While making this argument, the author introduces important variation between orangutan rehabilitation and reintroduction projects (particularly between Indonesia and Malaysia), ethical debates about wildlife tourism, and conceptual definitions of “wildness”.
