ABSTRACT

Reality is the attribution of an individual’s meaning of the world, based on her perceptions, ideologies, tastes, and miscellaneous opinions. Founded on this fundamental concept, the author argues that reality bears a referential and inspirational influence for the creation of fictional worlds, which constitutes the basis on which suspension of disbelief can be built. From historical to science fiction, textual congruence is the key to the absorption of artifice, and the lifelike character becomes the travelling companion in the reader’s fictional journeys. The aim of the chapter is for the apprentice writer to comprehend her own perception of what’s ‘real’ in order to use its fragments to create her own fictional universe.
