ABSTRACT

Arthur Miller, in his essay on “The Family in Modern Drama,” says that it is content which dictates form, and so no rules about endings can be applied mechanically. Miller says: most people, including the daily theater reviewers, have come to assume that the forms in which plays are written, spring either from nowhere or from the temperamental choice of the playwrights. The play begins in a world on the verge of going awry and ends with a world gone completely out of control and one where there is little hope for respite. What astonishes the playwright in writing an ending is how they could not have possibly known it in the beginning. The final moment of the play with Mama encapsulates the struggle of the mother for acceptance of her family’s place in society, and the family’s defiance of the housing restrictions, threats, and bribery, all meant to keep the present social order intact.
