ABSTRACT

This chapter offers ideas for sessions and performance projects. Name games, clarification of goals, and a preparation of space and people for collaborative work: these are all important functions of workshop warm-ups. Somatics, or experiential engagement with embodiment, are a core part of much performance work. Bodies in space and the relationship between embodiment and environments are another core theme of contemporary art practice that lends itself to exploration in community performance settings. Community performance can challenge traditional aesthetics within its stronghold and use stage technologies for its own aims: to widen participation, bring different kinds of bodies and sensibilities into the “limelight,” and to further dialogues about participation and inclusion. Games are an excellent warm-up for all kinds of community groups. One of the most important practitioners in this area is Augusto Boal, and his work with games has influenced the whole field.
