ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on inspiration derived from the particular place a community workshop might be located in and from the stories and memories of project participants. Different memories are stored in different ways: try to be attentive to the relative likelihood of preservation of some stories instead of others. There are many ways that memories can be activated. Sounds, textures, smells: they all can act as pathways into the past. Looking for historical photographs of sites or old family photos can also be a very useful way of gaining different kinds of memories, sense impressions, and a feel for a place’s history. Most localities hold myth memories of some sort, and sometimes these myths can become official, authorized points for tourist development or civic pride. Memories and stories are not just “thoughts”—they are often anchored in specific events, materials, sensations, textures, smells, and tastes.
