ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at various ways of finding money for community projects. Beyond funding, though, other issues of sustainability are important to community performance artists as well: building audiences that follow the work of a group, training and professional development, and connecting with other practitioners in order to develop and sustain one’s own work. Many community performance projects fund themselves not only through the money that performances bring in, direct high-profile sponsorship, or participant fees but also through grants, development money, and other funding sources that stress community integration higher than, or as highly as, aesthetic issues. The funding environment for community performance always changes quickly, and funding sources are different in different countries. Many community performance training institutions know that their clientele might need to find ways of making their time pay, and some might therefore offer funded places or even payment for participating in the development sessions.
